Walking along the earthen walls of the village rice paddies, these women are carrying food to celebrate the anniversary of a nearby temple. Women spend much of each day preparing the colorful rice cakes, fruits and decorations which they sometimes stack 4 to 6 feet high to carry on their heads. In many villages, every intersection, rice paddy and doorway receives a daily offering of rice, marigold flowers and incense. In this way, the islanders help to keep happy the spirits they believe are responsible for accidents, crop harvests and the health of villagers. For Westerners these baskets are beautiful multiple storage containers.Processions of beautifully dressed Balinese women can often be seen walking along village paths and roads, balancing offering baskets on their heads. Nowadays many women choose to ride to the temple on the back of a motor bike, hold the baskets tightly on their laps as the motor bike navigates the windy roads of Bali.
