Homes in the cold central
and northern provinces
generally had stone floors, which, obviously, became quite cold. So the Chinese
often made their chairs high enough to keep the occupant's feet off the ground,
which makes them a workable size for Westerners. One charming addition to the
seating plan was the footstool, low wooden platforms that allow one to stretch
the legs while avoiding the floor. These stools also make delightful small
tables, they can be stacked to hold magazines or remote control devices, or may
be used as a step for reaching high shelves and cupboards. They come in a
variety of shapes and sizes.
Shandong
is a coastal province. Shandong's name literally means "mountains' east",
which refers to the province's location east of the Taihang Mountains.
