265317 - Hebei - Early 20th C.

This type of cabinet is normally used in the kitchen for storage of food and some utensils. The carved panels were designed to circulate air around fruits and vegetables without letting in light.. The cabinet is characterized by a rectangular top with the square border above four paneled doors and 2 drawers. Often, the lattice door compartments housed live chickens and other fowl, destined for dinner. Some pieces may have been replaced during restoration.

The paint on the cabinet is new.

This cabinet was found in Hebei. The name Hebei means litteraly north of the (Yellow) river. A common alternate name for Hebei is Yānzhào, after the state of Yan and state of Zhao that existed here during the Warring States Period of early Chinese history.
